Do Air Conditioning units need regassing?
July 26, 2023
No, air conditioners typically do not need regular regassing. Modern air conditioners use copper lines to transport the refrigerant gas. Since copper is not porous, these systems generally do not require regassing unless a leak has developed.
However, car air conditioning systems are an exception. They use rubber hoses, which are slightly porous. This means that, like car tires that need occasional inflating, car air conditioners need periodic regassing. Auto electricians and car mechanics can assist with this service. Please note, Mackies does not service car air conditioners.
While many of us rely on our
air conditioning units , few truly understand what goes into maintaining optimal performance. One important aspect of AC maintenance is regular servicing. In this blog, we will explore what happens during AC services and how that contributes to the efficiency and reliability of your cooling and heating system.
The Importance Of Servicing
Before delving into the process, let’s discuss why your air conditioner needs servicing in the first place:
- Preventive Maintenance: Regular check-ups ensure your air conditioning unit is running efficiently and reduces the risk of preventable breakdowns.
- Energy Efficiency: A well-maintained air conditioning unit consumes less electricity.
- Consistent Cooling & heating: Servicing ensures that your air conditioner maintains a more consistent temperature throughout your home.
A full service is thorough, covering various critical elements to ensure your air conditioning unit is in optimal condition. Let’s discuss these elements in detail.
Comprehensive System Check
The service process begins with a comprehensive system check, which involves a careful examination of all parts of your air conditioning unit:
- Condenser and Evaporator Coils: These are checked for cleanliness and any signs of damage. Dirty coils can cause your system to overwork, resulting in higher energy consumption.
- Outdoor Unit: This is inspected for any signs of wear and tear. The check includes looking for damage to the fan motor and blades, anything blocking the coils and ensuring the unit is level on the ground.
Checking Refrigerant Levels
An air conditioner’s refrigerant plays an important role in the cooling and heating processes. During a full service, your technician will verify that your unit has the correct amount of refrigerant. If the levels are incorrect, they will address any leaks and adjust the refrigerant levels to the manufacturer’s specifications, ensuring maximum performance and efficiency.
Inspection Of Electrical Connections
Your technician will also conduct a thorough inspection of all
electrical connections. Loose or frayed wires and connections can pose a safety risk and impair your system’s operation. The technician will tighten any loose connections and replace any damaged wiring or connections to prevent potential issues.
Air Filter Clean/Replacement
A clean air filter is important to maintain your unit’s efficiency and the quality of the air in your home. Over time, filters become clogged with dust and other airborne particles. This can reduce airflow and force your system to work harder. As part of the service process, our technician will clean or replace your air filter, ensuring clean air and a well-functioning system.
Condensate Drain Examination
Your air conditioner’s condensate drain should also be checked and cleaned. A clogged condensate drain can cause water damage and increase humidity levels inside your home. Our technician will ensure the drain is clear and functioning correctly.
Understanding what happens during an air conditioning service can help you maintain your system’s efficiency and extend its lifespan.
A well-tuned air conditioning unit is not only about cooling your home—it’s about doing so in an efficient, effective, and safe manner.
